Chapter 8 - The Debriefing

The next morning, the sun rose brightly over Fort Liberty, casting a warm glow across the military base.

I sat in a highly secure briefing room inside the counterintelligence headquarters.

General Sterling sat across from me, reviewing a thick stack of classified reports.

“Your operation was an absolute, undisputed success, Agent Walker,” the general praised.

“Thank you, Sir,” I replied, sipping a hot cup of black coffee.

“Ethan and Patricia have already signed full confessions to avoid the death penalty for treason,” he informed me.

I felt a slight pang of sadness for the life I had built, but it was quickly replaced by immense relief.

I was finally free from their toxic manipulation and endless emotional abuse.

“Vanessa Brooks has also begun talking to our interrogators,” General Sterling continued.

“She gave up the names of three other foreign operatives operating on the East Coast.”

I nodded in satisfaction, knowing our tactical teams were already hunting them down.

“There is one more thing, Grace,” the general said, his tone shifting to something much more formal.

He stood up from his chair and opened a velvet box resting on the table.

Inside was the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, shining brilliantly under the fluorescent lights.

“For extreme bravery, exceptional investigative skills, and saving the lives of your fellow officers,” he read from the citation.

He walked around the table and proudly pinned the heavy medal to my dark suit jacket.

I stood at attention, feeling a surge of incredible pride in my difficult, secretive career.

“You are a true hero to this nation,” General Sterling smiled warmly.

I shook his hand firmly, finally receiving the respect I had rightfully earned.

My fake life as a fragile, freeloading housewife was officially over forever.

I was Special Agent Grace Walker, and I had never felt more powerful in my entire life.

I gathered my files and prepared to leave the briefing room to start my new, brilliant chapter.

But just as my hand touched the brass doorknob, my secure government phone began to vibrate.
