I drove onto the military tarmac the next morning, where a sleek black Gulfstream jet was waiting.
General Sterling was standing by the stairs, waiting to give me a proper military send-off.
“We are going to miss you around here, Senior Agent Walker,” the general smiled.
“I will miss the action, Sir, but I am ready for Washington,” I replied, returning his crisp salute.
I climbed the stairs and stepped into the luxurious, quiet cabin of the private government aircraft.
I took a seat by the window, watching the familiar landscape of Fort Liberty slowly disappear below the clouds.

Inside was a single, high-resolution surveillance photograph of a man meeting with a known terrorist.
I gasped aloud, dropping the folder onto the leather seat in absolute shock.

The man in the photograph wasn't a stranger.
It was my father, a decorated military general who had supposedly died in combat twelve years ago.
