Chapter 6 - The Fading Pulse

The military doctors shouted urgent commands as the armored transport sped toward the base.
They frantically injected emergency medications into my intravenous line, trying to stabilize my crashing blood pressure.
The baby's heart rate was dangerously low, plummeting with every passing second of the trauma.
My father held my hand tightly, his face pale with a fear I had never seen in him before.
He whispered prayers into my ear, begging me to stay strong for my unborn son.
The pain in my abdomen shifted from sharp contractions to a constant, tearing agony.
The lead trauma surgeon looked at my father with a grim, devastating expression.
He announced that my placenta was completely detaching due to the blunt force trauma of the crash.
They needed to perform a surgical delivery immediately, but we were still ten minutes away from the hospital.
The doctor stated that they had to operate right there in the back of the moving vehicle to save the child.
My father nodded firmly, giving them the authorization to do whatever was necessary.
The medical team quickly prepared a sterile field, splashing cold antiseptic across my stomach.
They administered a rapid local anesthetic, completely numbing the lower half of my exhausted body.
I stared at the ceiling of the transport, tears streaming down my face as the surgeon made the first incision.
I felt immense pressure, but my fading consciousness made the entire nightmare feel like a distant dream.

Suddenly, the transport violently slammed on its brakes, throwing the surgical team forward.
The driver yelled through the intercom that a massive sinkhole had swallowed the only bridge leading to the military base.
