Chapter 3 - The Flight

My father shouted for a medic as he pressed his hands fiercely against my bleeding stomach.
The bullet had only grazed my side, but the intense shock of the violence sent a massive contraction ripping through my body.
I screamed in pure agony, clutching the bedsheets as my water violently broke.
The soldiers wrestled a screaming Linda to the floor, snapping heavy steel handcuffs tightly around her wrists.
In the chaotic confusion, the soldier holding Ryan accidentally loosened his grip.
Ryan instantly drove his elbow into the soldier's throat, breaking free and sprinting toward the door.
He bolted down the apartment stairs before anyone could successfully grab him.
My father refused to leave my side to chase after the coward.
He scooped me up into his strong arms, ignoring the blood staining his pristine dress uniform.
He carried me down the stairs, ordering his men to secure the perimeter and call for a military ambulance.
The pain of the contractions was becoming unbearable, completely stealing the breath from my lungs.
We reached the lobby of the apartment building just as the military ambulance screeched to a halt outside.
Paramedics rushed toward us with a stretcher, swiftly loading me into the back of the emergency vehicle.
My father climbed into the ambulance with me, holding my hand and telling me to stay awake.
The paramedics attached monitors to my chest and frantically checked the baby's fading heartbeat.
The driver slammed on the gas, rushing us toward the secure military hospital on the base.

I closed my eyes, praying that my child would survive the nightmare my husband had caused.
Suddenly, a massive black truck intentionally blew through a red light and violently rammed into the side of our ambulance.
