Chapter 4 - The Wreckage

The deafening crunch of metal tore through the air as the ambulance rolled violently onto its side.

I was thrown against the safety restraints, the safety belts digging painfully into my bruised shoulders.

Medical equipment rained down around us in the dark, chaotic cabin of the overturned vehicle.

My father groaned in pain, clutching a severe laceration on his forehead.

He quickly unbuckled his harness and rushed to check on me in the dim emergency lighting.

I could barely breathe, but the baby was still kicking frantically inside my womb.

The rear doors of the ambulance were suddenly ripped open from the outside with a heavy crowbar.

Ryan stood in the pouring rain, holding a metal tire iron and looking like a deranged animal.

He had stolen a truck and followed us, determined to finish what his mother had started.

He reached into the overturned ambulance, attempting to drag me out by my ankles.

My father intercepted him, delivering a brutal punch that sent Ryan crashing backward onto the wet asphalt.

My father climbed out of the wreckage, standing between me and my abusive husband like a human shield.

He drew his military sidearm, pointing it directly at Ryan's chest.

He commanded Ryan to stay on the ground and surrender immediately.

Ryan laughed a bloody, chaotic laugh, raising his hands in a mocking gesture of defeat.

He whistled loudly into the rainy night.

Four heavily armed men stepped out of the shadows of the alleyway, aiming illegal assault rifles directly at my father.
