Chapter 9 - The Final Betrayal

I stared in absolute horror at the blinking red light on the remote detonator in Richard's suit pocket.

My mind raced frantically, trying to process why my biological father would carry a high-explosive trigger into a secured FBI raid.

Richard noticed my terrified gaze and gently placed his hand over mine, his eyes completely devoid of the paternal warmth he had shown earlier.

He calmly whispered that I had done an absolutely magnificent job playing the role of the tragic, vengeful widow.

Thorne suddenly stepped forward, but instead of helping the FBI agents, he raised his assault rifle and pointed it directly at the lead investigator.

The entire ballroom froze in a chaotic Mexican standoff as Thorne ordered the federal agents to drop their weapons immediately.

Evan began laughing hysterically from the floor, his handcuffed hands shaking as he realized exactly what was happening.

Evan screamed that Richard was never trying to save me; Richard was the mysterious leader of the syndicate they had been laundering money for all along.

The fifty million dollar insurance policy wasn't a payout for Evan; it was a highly elaborate financial smokescreen designed by Richard to hide a massive corporate embezzlement scheme.

Richard had only saved me from the cliff because he needed my biometric signature to finalize the offshore transfer legally.

Marcus Vance hadn't betrayed Richard; Marcus was simply the fall guy designated to take the blame when the FBI inevitably investigated.

Richard looked at me with cold, calculating detachment, stating that business was simply business, and I was a loose end that needed tying.

He reached into his pocket and placed his thumb over the detonator, explaining that the entire hotel was rigged with military-grade explosives.

He demanded the FBI release Evan and allow his syndicate members to walk out of the building, or he would bury everyone under thousands of tons of concrete.

I clutched my baby tightly, realizing the man who gave me life was the very monster trying to take it away.

I looked at the lead FBI agent, a young woman with fierce green eyes who hadn't lowered her weapon an inch despite Thorne's threat.

She caught my eye and gave me a barely perceptible, confident nod that sent a sudden jolt of electricity down my spine.

Without warning, the young FBI agent completely ignored Thorne's rifle and shot Richard squarely in the shoulder with her sidearm.

May you like

Richard screamed in pain, dropping the remote detonator onto the polished marble floor.

Before Thorne could pull his trigger, I kicked the remote detonator across the room, straight into the decorative fireplace where it melted instantly.
