Chapter 2 - The Insider

Panic instantly flashed across Evan’s handsome face on the surveillance monitor.
He violently shoved the man in the grey coat away and desperately looked around the crowded cathedral to see if anyone had noticed the altercation.
Celeste rushed forward, her perfectly painted lips tight with anxiety as she grabbed Evan’s arm and dragged him into a private side room.
Richard immediately isolated the audio feed from the hidden microphones he had planted in the cathedral's private chambers.
We listened in absolute silence as Evan began pacing frantically, cursing loudly and throwing a decorative vase against the stone wall.
Evan told Celeste that the plan was falling apart because the cleanup crew he hired had failed to locate my frozen corpse.
Celeste slapped him hard across the face, telling him to pull himself together before the insurance company got suspicious.
She reminded him that their insider at Whitmore Atlantic had already forged the coroner's death certificate to bypass the physical body requirement.
Richard’s jaw tightened so hard I thought his teeth might shatter under the immense pressure.
He immediately cross-referenced the forged death certificate in the company mainframe to see whose digital signature had authorized it.
The authorization code belonged to Marcus Vance, the Chief Financial Officer of Whitmore Atlantic and Richard’s most trusted friend of twenty years.
A deep betrayal washed over Richard’s face as he realized his entire executive board was likely compromised by this deadly conspiracy.
Before he could say a word, a sudden, blinding pain ripped through my lower abdomen, forcing a loud gasp from my lungs.
My hands flew to my stomach as a rush of warm fluid soaked through my hospital gown and pooled on the leather chair.
The sheer stress of watching my own funeral had triggered my body into premature labor.
Richard slammed his hand onto the emergency medical button on the wall, shouting for the surgical team to assemble immediately.
The heavy steel doors of our secure room slid open, and a doctor in full surgical scrubs rushed inside holding a syringe.
I looked up through the haze of agonizing pain, expecting to see the familiar face of my assigned physician.

Instead, I saw the cold, dead eyes of the man in the grey trench coat from the cathedral video feed.
He plunged the needle toward my arm, whispering that Evan sent his regards to the grieving widow.
