Chapter 7 - The Smear Campaign

Unaware that I held the keys to their destruction, Beatrice launched a desperate smear campaign.

She took to Facebook and the country club group chats, posting long, tearful messages about how I was a "gold-digging, unstable woman" who had faked an injury to steal her son’s hard-earned money and kidnap her granddaughter. She claimed Lily's fever was a hoax and that I was suffering from a mental breakdown.

She thought her wealth and social standing would protect her. She thought people would blindly believe the Vances.

But Victoria Thorne was already moving.

Instead of arguing on Facebook, Victoria forwarded the black ledger and the hard drive directly to the FBI’s White Collar Crime Division, and simultaneously sent a legally binding subpoena for financial discovery to Julian’s private equity firm.

The firm panicked. They launched an immediate internal audit.

The morning after Beatrice posted her tearful Facebook rant, the FBI raided her pristine, multi-million-dollar estate.

Neighbors filmed with their iPhones as federal agents carried boxes of documents out of Beatrice’s front door. The very friends she had hosted for dinner parties watched as the matriarch was escorted out in handcuffs, screaming about her innocence.

The smear campaign was over. The truth was written in federal indictments.
