Chapter 10 - The Rebirth

One Year Later.
The warm summer breeze ruffled Lily's hair as she ran across the sprawling green lawn of our new home.
We had sold the massive marital house in the city—it held too many dark memories. With the settlement money and the funds Victoria had secured in the divorce, I bought a beautiful, sunlit farmhouse in a quiet, tight-knit community near the coast.
Lily was seven now. The shadows that used to haunt her eyes when her father entered a room were entirely gone. She was thriving, playing soccer, making friends, and laughing with a lightness I hadn't heard in years.
I sat on the porch, sipping iced tea, watching her chase our new golden retriever puppy across the grass.
My phone buzzed. It was an email from Victoria Thorne, confirming that Julian’s final appeal had been officially denied. He was going to serve every single day of his sentence.
I locked my phone and set it down.
A year ago, I was standing barefoot in the freezing cold, terrified, bruised, and wondering how I was going to survive. They thought I was weak. They thought I would bow to their money and their image.
They didn't realize that a mother’s love is the most dangerous force on earth when threatened.
"Mommy! Watch this!" Lily yelled, doing a clumsy but enthusiastic cartwheel on the grass.

"Beautiful, sweetie!" I cheered, clapping loudly.
I took a deep breath of the fresh, salty air. We were safe. We were free. And the life we were building was more beautiful than anything the Vances could have ever bought.
