Chapter 17 - Total Ruin

Mia didn't stay long. Once she realized that Mark was completely cut off from the funds she had fallen in love with, she threw the stack of clinic bills directly at his chest and stormed back to her BMW.

"Don't ever contact me again, Mark," she spat out the window before peeling out of the driveway, showering Mark in a fresh cloud of farm dust.

Mark stood there, coughing, surrounded by scattered medical bills. He slowly turned back to me, the anger returning to his eyes. "You ruined my life," he hissed, taking a step up the porch stairs.

"Stay right there, son," a deep voice boomed from the doorway.

My father stepped onto the porch. He didn't have a shotgun, but he held a heavy wooden baseball bat by his side. His face was a mask of cold fury. Mark instantly froze, taking a step back down the stairs.

"Sarah ruined nothing," my father said, his voice low and dangerous. "You made your choices. Now you get to live with them."

"I want my half of the house," Mark demanded, pointing a trembling finger at me. "The house in the suburbs. My name is on the mortgage."

"Your name is on the mortgage," I agreed. "But my name is on the deed. And since you haven't contributed a single dime to the mortgage payments in three years—because you were too busy buying diamond tennis bracelets for your mistress—my lawyer has filed an emergency motion to grant me exclusive occupancy."

"You can't do that!" Mark yelled. "I have nowhere to go! My mother won't let me move back in with her!"

"That sounds like a personal problem," I said. "You have twenty-four hours to collect your personal belongings from the garage. I packed them in garbage bags for you. They’re sitting next to the trash cans where they belong. If you try to enter the house, the security system will alert the police. And I already showed them the security footage of you leaving."

Mark looked defeated. He opened his mouth to argue, but my father simply tapped the wooden bat against the porch railing. Thwack.

Mark swallowed hard, turned around, and began the long walk down the dirt road. The taxi driver had already left, unpaid.
