Chapter 11 - The Meltdown

The first frantic phone call had come at 9:00 AM when the hotel tried to run a pre-authorization on his card. The second, third, and fourth calls came in rapid succession. I ignored them all, letting them go to voicemail as I helped my father load the crates of sweet corn onto the back of the pickup truck.

By noon, I decided it was time to check the voicemails. I sat on the porch steps, pouring myself a glass of iced tea, and pressed play.

"Sarah, pick up the damn phone!" Mark's voice was shrill, completely stripped of the arrogant smugness he had worn just twenty-four hours earlier. "The front desk is holding us in the lobby. My card declined. The backup card declined. The joint account is showing a zero balance. Call the bank immediately and fix this! My mother is having a panic attack, and the staff is looking at us like we're criminals!"

I took a slow sip of my tea. The ice clinked softly against the glass. It was a beautiful symphony.

The next voicemail was fifteen minutes later. "Sarah, this isn't funny. The manager is threatening to call the police if we don't settle the $4,800 bill for the suite. They won't even let us up to the room to get our luggage. Pick up!"

I dialed his number. He answered on the first ring.

"What the hell took you so long?" he hissed, keeping his voice low, likely trying to maintain whatever shattered dignity he had left in the luxury resort's lobby. "Did you call the bank? They must have flagged the transaction for fraud."

"Oh, I didn't call the bank about fraud, Mark," I said, leaning back against the wooden railing of the porch. "I called them to freeze the accounts. All of them. Including the emergency fund."

Silence stretched over the line. I could almost hear the gears turning in his head.

"Are you insane?" he finally whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror. "Unfreeze them right now. My mother is crying. We are stranded in Aspen!"

"You're not stranded," I replied sweetly. "I'm sure Mia has a credit card you can use. Or maybe you can dip into the IVF fund you’ve been hiding from me?"

May you like

The utter silence that followed was the most satisfying sound I had heard in my entire life. He didn't say a word. He didn't gasp, he didn't argue. He just stopped breathing.

"Have a great vacation, Mark," I said, and ended the call.
