Chapter 8 - The Shadow Donor

I dropped the phone onto the carpet, my heart slamming against my ribs like a frantic drum.
The terrifying text message implied that Emma’s biological family was not only alive, but they were actively hunting us.
I immediately locked my bedroom door and rushed to check the security camera feeds on my tablet.
The perimeter of our new house was perfectly still, illuminated by the bright security floodlights.
I called Agent Harris, my hands shaking so violently I could barely press the correct numbers.
He answered on the second ring, his voice sharp and instantly alert.
"Someone just texted me claiming to be Emma's real parent, and they know where we live," I whispered frantically.
"Stay inside, lock every door, and do not let anyone in," Agent Harris commanded firmly.
"I am dispatching a tactical protection detail to your coordinates right now," he promised before hanging up.
I crept into Emma's room, gently lifting her sleeping body from the bed and carrying her into the windowless master bathroom.
I locked the heavy bathroom door, clutching a heavy metal flashlight like a weapon as we hid in the dark.
Emma stirred slightly, rubbing her tired eyes as she looked up at me in the dim light.
"Mommy, why are we hiding in the tub?" she asked, her voice small and frightened.
"We are just playing a quiet game until Grandpa gets here," I lied smoothly, forcing a calm smile onto my face.
An hour passed in agonizing, suffocating silence before I heard the sound of heavy tires crushing the gravel driveway.
I peeked through the master bedroom blinds and saw three unmarked black SUVs blockading our property.
Agent Harris stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding a heavy assault rifle and scanning the dark tree line.
I finally exhaled a massive breath of relief and unlocked the front door to let the federal agents inside.
They quickly swept every room of the house, ensuring there were no intruders hiding in the shadows.
Agent Harris sat with me at the kitchen table, his expression incredibly grim under the harsh overhead lights.
"We traced the origin of the text message using a specialized cyber unit," the agent explained quietly.
"The message was sent from a highly encrypted server located in Eastern Europe," he revealed.
Emma's biological mother hadn't just been a wealthy heiress; she had been the daughter of a notorious international crime boss.
My husband had foolishly thought he could steal money from one of the most dangerous syndicates in the world.

"They do not want the trust fund, they want the bloodline," Agent Harris warned me seriously.
"We have to place you and your family into the Witness Protection Program immediately," he stated without leaving room for argument.
