Chapter 4 - The Fake Social Worker

I stared at the glowing screen of the burner phone, my hands trembling violently in the freezing rain.

My innocent daughter was currently in the hands of a dangerous criminal syndicate hired by my psychotic husband.

I had to find out the exact location of the warehouse mentioned in the text message.

I quickly scrolled through the burner phone's brief message history, praying for any identifying details.

There was a previous message containing a simple GPS coordinate sent just two hours ago.

I pulled out my own smartphone and typed the coordinates into my digital map application.

The location pointed to an abandoned industrial shipping yard on the desolate outskirts of the city.

I knew calling the corrupt local police would only alert my husband to my survival.

I was completely on my own in the desperate fight to save my little girl's life.

I sprinted toward a nearby 24-hour convenience store and purchased a heavy steel flashlight and a roll of duct tape.

I hailed a passing taxi, paying the driver in cash to drop me off a mile away from the shipping yard.

The industrial area was pitch black, illuminated only by the faint glow of distant streetlights cutting through the heavy fog.

I crept silently past rusted shipping containers, my heart pounding loudly against my ribs.

I spotted a massive, dilapidated warehouse with a single, flickering light shining through a dirty side window.

I crouched low to the wet gravel and peeked carefully through the cracked glass pane.

Inside, the fake social worker was sitting on a metal folding chair, smoking a cigarette while scrolling on her phone.

Emma was asleep on a dirty mattress in the corner, her bandaged foot propped up on a cardboard box.

I felt a massive surge of maternal fury completely overwrite my fear.

I noticed a heavy electrical breaker box mounted on the exterior brick wall right beside the window.

I ripped the metal cover open and pulled the main power lever down with all my strength.

The single light inside the warehouse instantly died, plunging the massive building into absolute darkness.

I heard the fake social worker curse loudly in surprise as her chair scraped against the concrete floor.

I used the heavy steel flashlight to smash the door lock and slipped quietly inside the dark building.

I moved blindly toward the corner where I had seen Emma, whispering her name as softly as I could.

Suddenly, a bright spotlight flipped on from the catwalk above, blinding me completely.

"I told you she would come," my husband's voice echoed menacingly through a loudspeaker.
