Chapter 5 - The Hostage Situation

I shielded my eyes from the blinding spotlight, completely exposed in the center of the warehouse.

My husband stepped up to the metal railing of the catwalk, holding a remote control for the lighting system.

"You really are incredibly predictable," he laughed, his voice bouncing off the cold, corrugated steel walls.

The fake social worker stepped out of the shadows, aiming a suppressed pistol directly at my chest.

"Tie her to the steel beam," my husband ordered his hired accomplice.

I did not resist as the woman forcefully grabbed my arms and bound my wrists with heavy plastic zip-ties.

She pushed me hard against a rusted support pillar, ensuring I could not move a single inch.

My husband slowly walked down the metal stairs, savoring his twisted victory.

"You ruined my perfect life when you called the police tonight," he spat, his face twisting into an ugly scowl.

He walked over to the dirty mattress and aggressively yanked Emma up by her arm.

My daughter screamed in pain as she was forced to stand on her severely injured foot.

"Let her go right now!" I roared, struggling uselessly against the thick plastic restraints.

"The insurance company pays out double if the death is ruled a violent kidnapping gone wrong," he explained casually.

He pulled a small container of gasoline from the shadows and began splashing it across the wooden crates nearby.

"The authorities will find your charred remains and conclude that the kidnappers panicked and burned the evidence," he gloated.

He was going to burn us alive and walk away a wealthy, grieving father.

"You will never get away with this, my father is still alive," I reminded him desperately.

My husband paused, a cruel, mocking smirk spreading across his face.

"Your father suffered a massive brain hemorrhage an hour ago," he lied effortlessly.

"The hospital just called to inform me that he did not survive the emergency surgery," he added with a dark chuckle.

Tears of absolute devastation spilled down my cheeks as I realized I had lost my dad.

My husband pulled a silver lighter from his pocket and flicked the flame to life.

"Goodbye, my lovely family," he whispered, tossing the burning lighter onto the gasoline-soaked floor.

The fire erupted instantly, creating a terrifying wall of orange flames between me and the exit.

My husband and the fake social worker turned to walk out the heavy steel doors.

Just as they reached the exit, the massive metal doors were violently blown completely off their hinges.
