Chapter 8 - The Sting

Using David’s email, I sent one final message to the hitman.
I changed my mind. Meet me at the shipping yards tonight at 11 PM. I have your cash.
I had successfully manipulated two killers into a blind meeting. David was going to the docks expecting to find me—unarmed, vulnerable, and ready to be disposed of. The hitman was going to the docks expecting his money from a client who had just insulted him.
Elias and I drove down to the city, parking on a high vantage point overlooking the docks. We had binoculars and a police scanner.
At 10:50 PM, David’s sleek Mercedes pulled into the abandoned lot. He stepped out, holding a heavy briefcase, constantly looking over his shoulder.
At 10:55 PM, a black SUV rolled in. The man in the fleece jacket stepped out.
Through the binoculars, I watched the realization wash over David's face. He thought I had brought his own hitman to kill him. The hitman thought David was setting him up.
Words were exchanged. David raised his hands, panicking, stepping backward. The hitman pulled a gun.

"Time to call the cavalry," Elias said.
I dialed 911. "There are armed men at the South Docks. I heard gunshots."
