Chapter 5 - The Hunt Begins

David was indeed panicking. Using Elias's encrypted laptop in our remote cabin safehouse, I logged into our joint banking accounts—the ones David thought I was too stupid to monitor closely.
The accounts were drained.
David had maxed out every credit card and taken out a second mortgage on the house. He had funneled everything into an offshore LLC. He was broke, drowning in debt to dangerous people, and the insurance payout was his only way to survive.
But David had made one fatal error. He used the same password for everything. His arrogance convinced him I would never dare snoop.
I hacked into his private email. I found the burner address he used to communicate with the hitman. I read the terrifying, sterile emails discussing our "elimination" schedule.
Then, I found something even better. The hitman was demanding the second half of his payment. David was refusing to pay until the job was done.
"They're turning on each other," Elias noted, reading over my shoulder.
"Good," I smirked. "Let's pour some gasoline on the fire."

I drafted an email from David's account to the hitman. The deal is off. I'm not paying you a dime for a botched job. If you contact me again, I'll send the cops to your door.
I hit send. The hitman wasn't just a killer; he was a mercenary. And I had just provoked him.
