Chapter 4 - The Alibi

While I drove, my mind raced, piecing together David’s perfect plan.
He was in Chicago for a "conference." He had left a paper trail a mile wide: flight tickets, hotel check-ins, dinner reservations. He was establishing an ironclad alibi while a hired gun slit our throats or burned our house to the ground.
When the police called him, he would play the devastated husband perfectly. He’d cry on the local news. He’d cash the five-million-dollar check and spend it with his mistresses.
By nightfall, Sophie was asleep in the passenger seat, curled up with her teddy bear. I pulled into a deserted motel parking lot halfway to the state line. Elias was waiting by a pickup truck.
When I stepped out of the car, Elias pulled me into a fierce, crushing hug.
"You're safe now," he said.
"The man in the house... he saw us run," I said, shivering in the cold air. "David knows we aren't dead."
Elias handed me a thermos of hot coffee. "Which means David is panicking. He’s exposed. The hitman failed, and now David has a loose end."

"I have his insurance documents," I said, handing Elias the red folder. "Five million dollars, Elias. That’s what we are worth to him."
Elias flipped through the papers, his jaw tight. "He’s a cornered rat, Sarah. And cornered rats make mistakes. We aren't just going to hide. We're going to destroy him."
