Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Demand

The sight of the lethal syringe made my knees buckle.

My husband caught me, his face pale with a terrifying realization.

Our mother wasn't just in denial about an allergy; she was actively trying to murder her own granddaughter.

"Where is she, Lauren?" my husband asked, his voice deadly calm.

Lauren hiccuped, her shoulders shaking violently.

"She's in the basement parking garage."

Lauren explained that Mom had forced her out of the car and threatened to ruin her life if she didn't finish the plan.

Mom held all the strings to Lauren's trust fund and had a bizarre, pathological need for total control over the family.

Harper's medical needs had shifted the family's attention away from Mom, and she couldn't handle being ignored.

It was a textbook, horrific case of narcissistic rage disguised as grandmotherly concern.

My husband keyed his radio, relaying the description of my mother's car to the police units outside.

"We have her contained," he told me, squeezing my shoulder.

I looked at the heart monitor, watching Harper's steady, fragile rhythm.

Just then, a sharp, piercing alarm sliced through the quiet room.

The doctor rushed in, checking the monitors and examining Harper's skin.

"She's having a biphasic reaction," the doctor shouted, her voice tight with panic.

This was the secondary wave of anaphylaxis that we had always been warned about.

The residual allergen was binding to new receptors, and her airway was swelling shut all over again.

"We need the backup counter-meds from the pharmacy immediately!" the doctor yelled to the nurse.

The nurse grabbed the phone on the wall, dialing frantically.

She listened for a few seconds before her face drained of all color.

She slowly hung up the receiver and looked at us with absolute horror.

"The pharmacy just reported an armed trespasser."

May you like

The nurse swallowed hard.

"An older woman just barricaded herself inside with the only supply of pediatric counter-agents."
