Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Dark

My husband instantly drew the tactical flashlight from his belt, blinding the doorway with a brilliant white beam.

Lauren stood there, frozen in the glare.

She raised both hands in the air, squinting against the harsh light.

"Don't hurt me," she sobbed, stripping the surgical mask from her face.

My husband kept the light pinned right on her chest, his other hand gripping the heavy metal IV pole as a weapon.

"Why are you here, Lauren?" I screamed, the rage finally overtaking my fear.

"Mom made me do it," she cried, taking a trembling step into the room.

The security guards shoved past her, grabbing her arms and forcing her against the wall.

She didn't fight them.

She just kept staring at me with wide, panicked eyes.

"Mom said Harper's allergy was a lie you made up for attention."

Lauren’s voice broke as she spilled the twisted logic our mother had fed her for months.

"She said if we exposed her to a little bit, it would prove you were crazy, and we could finally have a normal family."

"You almost killed her!" I roared, pointing at the fragile machine keeping my daughter alive.

"I know," Lauren wept, sliding down the wall as the guards cuffed her.

"But when I saw Harper stop breathing, I knew Mom had lied to me."

She looked up at my husband, her face streaked with mascara and tears.

"That's why I came here to find you."

I scoffed, unable to believe a single word coming out of her mouth.

"You came to take a picture of her to torment us!"

Lauren shook her head violently, struggling against the cuffs.

"No, the picture wasn't for you."

She nodded toward the pocket of her scrubs.

"Mom demanded proof that I finished the job."

The charge nurse reached into Lauren's pocket and pulled out a heavy metal syringe.

It was filled with a massive dose of pure potassium.

Mom hadn't sent Lauren here to apologize.

She had sent her here to make sure Harper never woke up.
