Chapter 9 - The Siege

The digital timer on the massive television screen began aggressively counting down from sixty seconds in bright, blood-red numbers.

David kept his pistol aimed steadily at the dark hallway, his professional training completely taking over in the face of absolute terror.

He whispered frantically that if we handed the files over to the syndicate, they would simply kill us anyway to eliminate all loose ends.

I crouched lower behind the cold marble island, ignoring the intense, throbbing pain radiating from my fractured arm.

I realized that Marcus had intentionally trapped me in this deadly situation as his ultimate revenge from behind bars.

With only forty seconds left on the clock, David desperately typed a command into his laptop to attempt a total system override.

Sparks violently showered from the laptop keyboard as a vicious counter-virus completely fried the motherboard in an instant.

The mechanical voice on the television laughed cruelly, announcing that all external communications were permanently severed.

Thirty seconds remained until the heavily armed hit squad outside would unleash pure fire and destruction upon the house.

I closed my eyes and desperately searched my memory for any hidden flaw in the expensive smart-home system Marcus loved so much.

I remembered a rainy afternoon three years ago when Marcus complained about a massive blind spot in the basement security grid.

He had built a hidden, reinforced storm shelter beneath the wine cellar but never properly connected it to the main network.

I grabbed David's shoulder and urgently told him about the hidden bunker located directly beneath our feet.

With only fifteen seconds left, David helped me up and we sprinted blindly through the dark, terrifying house toward the basement door.

We crashed down the wooden stairs just as the heavy glass skylights in the living room shattered violently under the weight of the assassins.

The digital timer hit zero, and the terrifying sound of automatic gunfire instantly ripped through the expensive furniture above us.

I scrambled behind the massive wooden wine racks, desperately feeling the cold brick wall for the hidden latch Marcus had installed.

My fingers finally brushed against a small, cold iron lever perfectly concealed behind a dusty bottle of vintage red wine.

I pulled it with all my remaining strength, and a heavy section of the brick wall silently swung inward.

David shoved me into the dark, reinforced concrete bunker just as heavy boots began thundering down the basement stairs.

He jumped in right behind me and slammed the heavy steel vault door shut, aggressively spinning the internal locking wheel.

A deafening explosion rocked the foundation of the house above us, shaking dust and debris onto our heads.

The hit squad had detonated a massive firebomb in the living room, attempting to incinerate all evidence of the digital files.

We sat in the absolute darkness of the tiny concrete bunker, listening to the violent inferno raging violently above us.

David turned on a small tactical flashlight, illuminating a small wooden desk resting in the corner of the hidden room.

Resting on top of the desk was a heavy steel lockbox that Marcus had apparently kept hidden from the rest of the world.

David used his heavy pistol grip to violently smash the padlock open, desperate to find a weapon or a communication device.

He opened the lid and immediately froze, his eyes widening in absolute shock at the contents inside.

He slowly pulled out a thick, terrifyingly detailed assassination dossier with a bright red target stamp on the cover.

The primary target listed in the file was not a powerful politician or a wealthy corporate executive.

It was my younger sister, who had supposedly died in a tragic, purely accidental car crash more than ten years ago.
