Chapter 1 - The Morning Light

The morning sun cast a cold shadow across the silent hallway of our expensive home.

My shattered arm throbbed with a dull and agonizing rhythm beneath the heavy plaster cast.

Marcus had already left for his corporate office without leaving so much as a note on the kitchen counter.

He fully expected me to spend the entire day slaving over a hot stove to prepare a massive feast for his important colleagues.

Instead of heading to the kitchen to cook, I walked directly into his private home office and locked the heavy oak door behind me.

For seven years, I had respected his privacy and never once opened the sleek steel safe hidden behind his bookshelf.

Today, I did not care about his rules or his pathetic demands for absolute obedience.

I had secretly memorized the combination months ago by watching his reflection in the dark window pane during a thunderstorm.

My left hand trembled slightly as I spun the cold metal dial to the correct sequence of numbers.

The heavy door clicked open with a soft metallic thud that echoed in the quiet room.

I reached inside and bypassed the stacks of cash, pulling out a thick manila folder labeled with my maiden name.

My eyes scanned the first page of the legal document, and my heart completely stopped in my chest.

Marcus had not just been verbally abusive and cruel to me behind closed doors.

He had secretly filed court petitions to have me legally declared mentally incompetent due to severe depression.

He was planning to commit me to a psychiatric facility so he could seize total control of the massive trust fund my grandfather had left me.

I realized with absolute horror that his decision to shove me onto the freezing porch last night was not a drunken accident.

It was a calculated attempt to create a documented medical history of me acting clumsy, erratic, and utterly unstable.

My hands clenched into fists as hot tears of absolute fury burned the corners of my eyes.

I carefully placed the documents back into the safe and closed the heavy steel door.

I pulled out my cell phone and dialed the private number of my oldest friend, who happened to be a ruthless divorce attorney.

When Evelyn answered, I told her exactly what Marcus was planning to do to me.

She went completely silent for a moment before telling me to breathe and listen to her very carefully.

Evelyn revealed that her private investigator had been looking into Marcus for weeks at her own personal request.

She told me that Marcus was currently embezzling millions of dollars from his own company.

My husband was planning to frame me for the stolen corporate funds before having me permanently locked away in a hospital.
