Chapter 1 - The Commander's Arrival

The heavy, authoritative footsteps stopped right outside my hospital room door.

Russell turned around slowly, his arrogant smirk faltering for just a fraction of a second.

The heavy wooden door swung open to reveal a tall, imposing man in a highly decorated military uniform.

Colonel Whitaker stepped into the neonatal intensive care unit with an aura of absolute, undeniable authority.

He was a highly decorated veteran and the sworn legal protector of my late adoptive father's massive estate.

Russell scoffed loudly and rolled his eyes at the older gentleman.

He arrogantly asked what an old, washed-up soldier was doing in a private hospital wing.

Whitaker completely ignored my cruel husband and walked straight toward my hospital bed.

He looked down at the freshly signed divorce papers resting on my plastic medical tray.

He gently asked me if giving up everything was the path I truly wanted to take today.

I nodded slowly, desperately holding back my bitter tears of physical and emotional pain.

Whitaker turned his piercing, icy gaze toward Russell and the mistress standing beside him.

Russell puffed out his chest, proudly bragging that he now owned all the corporate assets and properties.

He confidently claimed that I was completely penniless and would be sleeping on the street by tomorrow morning.

Whitaker pulled a thick, sealed manila envelope from the inside pocket of his military jacket.

He calmly informed Russell that my late father had placed all of my true inheritance into a classified blind trust.

The lucrative companies Russell mistakenly thought he owned were merely shell corporations leasing assets directly from my trust.

By forcing me to sign those divorce papers, Russell had formally surrendered his marital rights to the actual billion-dollar fortune.

Russell's face turned completely pale white as the devastating realization finally hit him.

He snatched the folder from the bed, violently attempting to tear the signed divorce papers in half.

Whitaker simply raised his hand toward the hallway, and two heavily armed military police officers stepped into the room.

They immediately placed their hands on their holstered weapons, daring my husband to make a sudden move.

Tessa stared at Russell with a look of absolute betrayal, her eyes wide with greedy confusion.

She angrily grabbed his arm and demanded to know if he was actually completely broke.

Russell completely ignored her whining, staring directly at me with a gaze full of pure, unadulterated hatred.

He realized he had just signed away his entire luxurious life to a woman he thought he had successfully broken.

But his rising anger quickly morphed into a sinister, deeply calculating grin.

He took a slow step backward toward the hospital door, looking dangerously at the incubator holding my fragile daughter.

He whispered that a blind trust legally requires living heirs to remain active and healthy.

Suddenly, the harsh, deafening blare of a medical alarm erupted from Elise's plastic incubator.

The heart monitor machine flashed a terrifying, bright red warning light across the dark room.

My tiny, innocent daughter's heart rate was rapidly and inexplicably dropping to zero.
