Chapter 4 - The Hidden Ledger

The mechanical voice on the phone sent a terrifying shiver down my spine.
The stranger told me to open the encrypted folder labeled with the previous year's tax returns.
I balanced my laptop on my knees as the transport van sped through the dark city streets.
I navigated to the folder and entered the complex decryption key I had created.
I expected to see standard corporate tax evasion or inflated consulting invoices.
Instead, I found a hidden ledger tracking massive international wire transfers to offshore shell companies.
Julian was not running a legitimate consulting firm.
He was laundering millions of dollars for an incredibly dangerous international crime syndicate.
The stranger on the phone explained that Julian had promised his clients their money would be cleaned by Friday.
Because I had frozen the corporate escrow accounts, Julian could not pay the syndicate.
The voice warned me that these people did not use lawyers to resolve their financial disputes.
They used violence, and Julian was currently blaming me for the missing millions.
He had convinced the syndicate that I had embezzled their money and run away.
I was no longer just hiding from an abusive husband and a pair of greedy parents.
I was now being hunted by ruthless criminals who believed I had stolen their fortune.
I hung up the phone and desperately tried to process the massive scale of Julian's deception.
The transport van pulled into the secure underground garage of Mara's private condominium building.
Mara was waiting by the elevator, surrounded by three heavily armed private security contractors.

She looked at my bruised face and promised me that we were going to destroy him.
As the elevator doors closed, the building's fire alarm suddenly began to blare with a deafening screech.
