Chapter 9 - The Last Stand

The sterile metal scalpel gleamed dangerously under the harsh hospital lights.

My mother lunged toward the bed with terrifying speed, aiming the sharp blade directly at Emma.

She had completely lost her mind, determined to finish the job and claim the insurance money by force.

I threw my body over Emma, shielding her tiny frame with my own back.

I squeezed my eyes shut and braced for the agonizing pain of the blade tearing into my skin.

The pain never came.

A loud, sickening thud echoed through the room, followed by the clatter of metal dropping onto the floor.

I opened my eyes and turned my head slowly.

Marcus was standing between the bed and my mother, breathing heavily with his fists tightly clenched.

He had intercepted her attack and delivered a devastating punch directly to her jaw.

My mother was lying unconscious on the floor, surrounded by the shattered glass of the door.

My father stared at his wife in shock before raising his hands high in the air in total surrender.

Charlotte dropped to her knees, sobbing hysterically and begging the police for a plea deal.

The officers swiftly secured handcuffs onto all three of them, dragging their limp bodies out of the intensive care unit.

Detective Ramirez holstered her weapon and placed a comforting hand on Marcus's shoulder.

"Josh gave a full statement," Maria said softly, making sure we heard the good news.

"Your names are completely cleared, and they are facing multiple counts of attempted murder and fraud."

I let out a breath that felt like it had been trapped in my chest for an entire week.

I turned back to Emma, who was watching the commotion with tired but completely aware eyes.

"Is the bad lady gone?" Emma asked, her small fingers gripping my shirt tightly.

"Yes, baby," Marcus said, leaning down to kiss her forehead while tears streamed down his face.

"The bad people are never going to hurt you again."

The attending doctor stepped forward, a genuine smile finally breaking across his professional face.

He checked Emma's vitals and declared that she was completely out of the woods and on the fast track to recovery.

The nightmare was officially over, and my family was finally safe.

I held my husband's hand tightly, feeling the warmth of love and protection that my parents had never given me.

Suddenly, the heart monitor attached to Emma’s chest let out a single, piercing beep.

Then another beep followed, faster and completely erratic.

Emma’s eyes rolled back into her head, and her tiny body began to seize violently on the mattress.
