Chapter 10 - The True Betrayal

The doctors swarmed the bed again, injecting anti-seizure medication directly into Emma’s IV line.
The longest two minutes of my life dragged by as I watched her small body tremble against the sheets.
Finally, the medication took effect, and Emma settled back into a deep, peaceful, and healing sleep.

I walked past the guest bedroom where Josh had been staying since the terrifying night in the car trunk.
I noticed Josh's heavy canvas duffel bag sitting open on the bed, waiting to be unpacked.
As I walked by, a cheap, prepaid burner phone slipped out of the side pocket and landed on the floor.
The screen lit up brightly upon impact, revealing a drafted, unsent text message addressed to my mother's old phone number.

The message read, "I sawed the treehouse exactly like you paid me to do, so keep your mouth shut about my gambling debts."
The heavy, undeniable sound of Josh's boots slowly echoed down the hallway directly behind me.
