Chapter 8 - The Awakening

The entire room froze as the loud gasp echoed off the sterile walls.
It did not come from the medical machinery or the doctors.
It came directly from Emma’s small, pale lips.
My four-year-old daughter took a massive, independent breath of air, her chest rising sharply on its own.
The heart monitor instantly spiked, returning to a strong, steady rhythm without the machine's help.
The attending doctor physically jumped backward, completely shocked by the impossible medical miracle.
Emma’s eyelids fluttered rapidly, fighting against the heavy sedation and the bright fluorescent lights.
She slowly opened her beautiful brown eyes and looked directly at the ceiling.
"Mommy," Emma whispered, her voice incredibly weak and raspy.
I found superhuman strength, throwing off the two security guards and smashing a heavy fire extinguisher against the glass door.
The reinforced glass spider-webbed, and I kicked it as hard as I could until the door shattered entirely.
I rushed to the side of the bed and buried my face in Emma’s neck, weeping tears of profound joy.
"I am right here, my sweet girl," I cried, kissing her warm cheek repeatedly.
My mother’s confident smile completely vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated panic.
"Put her back to sleep!" my mother shrieked at the doctor, losing complete control of her facade.
"She is clearly in severe pain, you have to sedate her immediately!"
The doctor frowned deeply, crossing his arms and stepping away from the medical cart.
"The patient is breathing independently and is fully conscious," the doctor stated firmly.
"Your medical proxy is officially void because life support is no longer required."
My father cursed loudly and grabbed my mother by the arm, dragging her toward the broken doorway.
They realized their sinister plan had just collapsed, and the insurance money was entirely out of reach.
Before they could step over the shattered glass, Detective Maria Ramirez blocked the exit.
She was accompanied by four heavily armed police officers and a furious-looking Marcus, who was no longer in handcuffs.
"Going somewhere, Margaret?" Maria asked, flashing her gold detective badge.
"We just found a stolen truck parked behind your daughter Charlotte's house."
Charlotte let out a loud squeak of terror and tried to hide behind my father's back.
"And we found Josh locked in the trunk, alive but very willing to testify against all of you," Maria finished with a grim smile.
The police officers stepped forward with heavy steel handcuffs, ready to arrest the monsters who ruined my life.

My mother looked around the room, realizing there was absolutely no escape from her crimes.
Instead of surrendering, she let out a terrifying scream of rage and snatched a sharp surgical scalpel from the doctor's tray.
