Chapter 9 - The Siege

I stared down the dark barrel of Isabella's weapon, my mind racing desperately for a way to survive.
"If you kill me, Adrian will hunt you to the ends of the earth," I bluffed, my voice shaking despite my best efforts.
Isabella laughed, a sharp, manic sound that echoed terribly in the cold night air.
"Adrian is bleeding out in a hole, and my new friends are going to pry that bunker open in exactly five minutes," she gloated.
She grabbed me by the hair and dragged me roughly toward the hidden entrance of the safe room.
"Open the hatch, Elena, and tell my brother to surrender, or I will blow your brains all over this beautiful grass."
I slowly reached down and spun the locking wheel on the hidden metal panel.
The heavy door creaked open, revealing the dark, concrete stairwell leading down into the bunker.
"Adrian, it is Elena!" I shouted loudly, hoping to warn him that I was absolutely not alone.
Isabella shoved me hard down the concrete stairs, sending me tumbling painfully to the floor of the safe room.
She stepped confidently into the bunker, keeping her gun aimed directly at my head as she surveyed the small room.
Adrian was slumped against the wall, looking entirely unconscious in a massive pool of his own dark blood.
"Checkmate, big brother," Isabella sneered, raising her weapon to deliver the final, lethal shot to his chest.
Suddenly, a tiny, terrified voice echoed from the dark corner behind the metal supply crates.
"Leave my mommy alone!" Mia screamed at the top of her lungs.
Isabella spun around, genuinely shocked to see a five-year-old girl pointing a silver pistol with shaking hands.
"You wouldn't dare, you little brat," Isabella mocked, turning her own weapon toward my precious daughter.
Before Mia could even attempt to pull the heavy trigger, a deafening blast shattered the silence of the bunker.
Isabella screamed in pure agony, dropping her weapon as her right shoulder completely exploded in a spray of crimson.

Standing at the top of the bunker stairs was Rosa Moretti, holding her smoking shotgun with absolute, terrifying precision.
"You are no longer a daughter of mine," the matriarch stated coldly, stepping down into the room.
