Chapter 10 - The Debt Paid

Isabella writhed on the concrete floor, clutching her shattered shoulder and sobbing in absolute defeat.
Rosa ignored her treacherous daughter completely and rushed to Adrian's side to assess his terrible wounds.
I grabbed the red trauma bag and immediately began packing his shoulder with the advanced medical clotting agents.
Within thirty minutes, the heavy sirens of state police cruisers filled the night air outside the compound.
Rosa had called in some incredibly powerful political favors to have the remaining Falcone men arrested and Isabella quietly disappeared into a highly secure, off-the-books prison.
Adrian survived the night, and a private mob doctor gave him several necessary blood transfusions by morning.
Three days later, I was standing in the immaculate kitchen of my tiny Manhattan apartment, packing all of our meager belongings into cheap cardboard boxes.
Adrian Moretti sat at my small, worn kitchen table, his arm secured in a heavy black medical sling.
"You saved my life, Elena, and my mother owes her life to your daughter's incredible kindness," he said smoothly.
He slid a heavy, thick envelope across the scratched wooden table toward me.
"This contains the deed to a beautiful, fully paid house in a very safe, gated community in Connecticut," he explained.
"There is also a trust fund completely established for Mia's future education, and enough money so you will never have to clean another floor again."
I stared at the envelope, utterly overwhelmed by the massive, life-changing reward for simply being a decent human being on a freezing sidewalk.
We moved into our gorgeous new home the following week, leaving our terrifying life of poverty and mafia shootouts permanently behind.
Mia finally had a huge backyard to play in, and I finally had the profound peace of mind I had desperately craved for years.
The violent, bloody nightmare was completely over, and our absolute dream life had finally begun.
A month later, I was enjoying my morning coffee on my new porch when I noticed a perfectly wrapped gift box sitting on the welcome mat.
I opened the beautiful silver ribbon and found an incredibly expensive, rare porcelain doll sitting inside.

Tucked neatly under the doll's arm was a small piece of heavy, black cardstock with a single sentence written in silver ink.
"She has her father's eyes, Elena, and the Falcone family always comes back to collect their missing blood."
