Chapter 2 - The Freezing Vault

My father stared at the glowing screen in absolute, paralyzing horror as the masked figure vanished.
He immediately recognized the implication of the threat, but he had no idea who the masked enforcer actually was.
I smiled coldly as I watched Ethan’s brilliant digital handiwork unfold perfectly on my laptop screen.
The temperature inside the Tahoe villa was already dropping rapidly toward freezing as the mountain winds battered the exterior.
Susan wrapped her expensive designer coat tightly around her trembling shoulders and began to cry softly in the dark.
Olivia yelled furiously at David, demanding that he do something useful instead of just standing there like a coward.
David marched angrily into the dark kitchen and grabbed a heavy steel meat cleaver from the wooden butcher block.
He approached the reinforced steel plate covering the breaker box with a desperate, violent look in his eyes.
He swung the heavy blade directly at the electronic keypad, hoping to smash the locking mechanism into pieces.
Sparks flew violently into the air as the sharp blade bounced harmlessly off the military-grade casing.
The automated voice of the security system echoed through the house once again, devoid of any human emotion.
"Aggressive tampering detected on main control panel."
"Dropping internal temperature by five degrees to preserve core system integrity."
The massive air conditioning vents roared to life, blasting freezing air into the already dangerously cold room.
My father fell weakly to his knees, clutching his chest in sheer, overwhelming panic.
He tearfully confessed to his family that he had borrowed a massive amount of money from a very dangerous criminal syndicate.
He admitted he thought he could use my secluded house to hide from the ruthless men tracking his every move.
Olivia looked at him with pure disgust and an absolute, world-shattering sense of betrayal.
She realized her beautiful dream home was actually just a desperate meat shield for her father's massive, unforgivable gambling debts.
David threw the damaged cleaver on the ground and aggressively pulled out his cell phone to call the local police.
He dialed 911 with shaking fingers, hoping the local authorities would rescue them from this freezing digital nightmare.
The call connected instantly, but it did not route to a local emergency dispatcher in the Tahoe area.
A cold, deeply authoritative voice answered the emergency line instead.
