Chapter 10 - The Safe House

Agent Carter shoved me into the passenger seat of the tactical vehicle and practically tore out of the industrial parking lot.

"We have units swarming the hospital right now, but they vanished completely," Carter told me, her jaw clenched tightly.

My heart shattered into a million jagged pieces, realizing the syndicate must have had a backup extraction team ready.

I squeezed my eyes shut, praying that Grandma was somehow keeping Leo safe in the middle of this absolute terror.

Suddenly, my completely waterlogged cell phone sitting in the cup holder buzzed violently to life.

I stared at the cracked screen in pure shock, unable to believe it was still functioning after the dive.

It was an unknown number, and I answered it with a trembling, terrified hand.

"Sweetheart, are you completely safe right now?" Grandma's calm, steady voice echoed through the speaker.

"Grandma!" I cried out, tears of massive relief instantly flooding my tired eyes.

"Where are you, and is Leo okay?"

"We are perfectly fine," she replied, the sound of a baby happily cooing audible in the background.

"When the fake police officers showed up outside my door, I knew immediately they were not legitimate."

"I knocked them both out with a heavy metal bedpan, grabbed the baby, and snuck out through the hospital laundry chute."

I let out a completely hysterical, joyful laugh, marveling at the incredible resilience of my amazing grandmother.

"We are hiding safely at my friend Martha's secure farm outside the city limits," Grandma continued proudly.

Agent Carter grabbed the phone, verified the exact location, and dispatched a heavily armed federal protection detail to the farm.

Within hours, the flash drive I recovered was fully decrypted by the FBI cyber division.

It contained a massive treasure trove of names, offshore bank accounts, and direct communication logs linking the entire syndicate.

The federal authorities launched a massive, coordinated sweep, arresting dozens of high-level buyers and corrupt officials.

My father and Elaine both received multiple consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

The corrupt Detective Miller survived his gunshot wound, only to be thrown into a maximum-security federal penitentiary.

Six months later, the chaotic dust finally settled, and the court officially granted me full, permanent legal custody of Leo.

Grandma, Leo, and I used the state victim compensation fund to buy a beautiful, sunny little house right next to the beach.

The traumatic memories of that horrific night slowly faded, replaced by the peaceful, joyful sounds of my brother laughing in the garden.

We were completely safe, surrounded by love, and living the exact perfect life that we all truly deserved.

I walked to the metal mailbox at the end of our driveway to gather the morning deliveries, feeling the warm, pleasant sun on my face.

Inside the box, sitting perfectly alone, was a small, unmarked brown package wrapped in heavy packing tape.

I opened it right there on the sidewalk, and my blood ran completely, terrifyingly cold.

Resting inside the cardboard box was a pristine, empty glass chili jar.

And taped to the smooth glass was a single, handwritten note in my father's familiar handwriting that read: "I won my appeal today."
