Chapter 8 - The Hidden Ledger

I stared down at the lighthouse keychain, suddenly remembering that I had never figured out who sent it to the hospital.
The metal felt unusually heavy in my palm, and I noticed a tiny seam running along the bottom edge of the plastic.
I used my fingernail to pry the bottom open, revealing a micro-SD card hidden perfectly inside the hollow casing.
I immediately handed the tiny memory card to Rebecca, who plugged it into her encrypted laptop in the back of the police van.
The file contained a massive, meticulously detailed master ledger of the cartel's entire global money-laundering network.
It included names of corrupt politicians, bribed judges, and compromised police chiefs across the entire state.
"This is the holy grail of financial evidence," Rebecca whispered, her eyes wide with absolute disbelief.
Someone incredibly powerful wanted the cartel destroyed, and they had used me as the perfect courier for the evidence.
I handed the laptop to Detective Cole, who immediately secured the digital files on a federal server.
With this ledger, the FBI could dismantle the entire criminal syndicate before sunrise.
The next few hours were a chaotic blur of police statements, medical checkups, and frantic phone calls.
I sat in the hospital waiting room, holding a cup of terrible coffee while waiting for news on my sister's surgery.
Chloe sat beside me, resting her head on my shoulder in comfortable, exhausted silence.
The surgeon finally walked through the double doors, pulling off his bloody mask with a tired smile.
He assured me that the bullet had completely missed Sarah's vital organs, and she was going to make a full recovery.
I exhaled a massive breath of relief, feeling the crushing weight of the last three weeks finally lift off my shoulders.
I walked into Sarah's recovery room and saw her resting peacefully against the crisp white pillows.
Rebecca was sitting in a chair next to the bed, holding Sarah's hand with unexpected tenderness.
I realized then that Rebecca was not just a private investigator hired to do a dangerous job.
She actually cared deeply for my sister, and they had built a life together while hiding from our monstrous parents.
I smiled at them, knowing that for the first time in my life, I finally had a real family I could trust.
Detective Cole entered the room holding a thick manila envelope sealed with official FBI tape.
"The federal government has successfully seized all the cartel's illegal assets using the ledger," Cole announced proudly.
However, he explained that the two million dollars in my offshore account was entirely clean money.
It was a legal trust fund set up by my late grandfather, which my parents had desperately tried to steal.
The money officially belonged to me, and my future was finally secure.

I looked at the massive check in my hands, feeling completely overwhelmed by the sudden turn of events.
Everything was perfect, until the hospital room door swung open and a heavily armed man stepped inside.
