Chapter 7 - The Standoff

The flashing red and blue lights of the tactical vans illuminated the dark runway like a terrifying strobe light.
Dozens of heavily armed FBI agents poured out of the vehicles, raising their assault rifles toward the private jet.
Detective Cole stepped out of the lead van holding a megaphone, demanding that everyone drop their weapons immediately.
My mother's cartel guards realized they were hopelessly outnumbered and instantly threw their guns onto the concrete.
I watched in absolute relief as Detective Cole rushed forward to cut the zip-ties off Chloe's wrists.
Chloe scrambled away from the plane and ran straight into my arms, crying hysterically into my shoulder.
My mother stood frozen near the boarding stairs, her arrogant composure completely shattering into pure panic.
She realized the money transfer had not gone through because the FBI had just frozen all related financial assets.
"You ruined everything!" my mother screamed at me, completely ignoring the federal agents surrounding her.
She suddenly reached into her pristine white coat and pulled out a small, silver handgun.
Without hesitating, she aimed the weapon directly at my chest and pulled the trigger.
The gunshot echoed across the tarmac, but I did not feel the agonizing impact of the bullet.
Sarah had thrown herself in front of me at the very last second, taking the bullet meant for my heart.
My sister collapsed onto the cold concrete, clutching her bleeding shoulder in intense pain.
Detective Cole instantly returned fire, shooting my mother squarely in the leg and dropping her to the ground.
Federal agents swarmed my mother, pinning her down and violently ripping the gun from her grasp.
Rebecca dropped to her knees beside Sarah, pressing her hands hard against the gunshot wound to stop the bleeding.
"Stay with me, Sarah, the medics are coming!" Rebecca yelled frantically over the loud sirens.
I knelt in a puddle of my sister's blood, holding her hand while tears blurred my vision completely.
The paramedics rushed onto the scene with a stretcher, quickly loading Sarah into the back of an ambulance.
Detective Cole walked over to me, looking utterly exhausted but genuinely relieved that we were still alive.
He told me that my mother was going to federal prison for the rest of her miserable life.
He also mentioned that they found my father locked in a car trunk nearby, completely terrified and begging for police protection.
The nightmare that had destroyed my family and put me in a coma was finally coming to an official end.

As the ambulance sped away toward the hospital, I felt a strange vibration coming from the pocket of my jacket.
I reached inside and pulled out the old lighthouse keychain that had arrived in the mysterious cardboard box days ago.
