Chapter 8 - The Inferno

We raced toward the edge of the city, the sky glowing an eerie orange in the distance. The old sanitarium was completely engulfed in roaring flames. Fire trucks and police cars surrounded the building, their lights flashing uselessly against the inferno. Julian slammed on the brakes, the SUV skidding to a halt near the barricades. I didn't wait for the car to stop completely before I threw open the door and ran. "Clara, wait!" Julian yelled, chasing after me. I ignored him, my heart pounding as I pushed past the police officers. "My mother is in there!" I screamed, struggling against the hands that grabbed me. The heat was unbearable, the roar of the fire deafening. "It's too dangerous, ma'am!" an officer shouted, holding me back. "The roof is about to collapse!" I watched in horror as the massive wooden doors of the sanitarium crumbled into ash. Tears streamed down my face, the despair threatening to consume me. After twenty-five years of believing she was dead, I had finally found her. Only to lose her again in a fiery trap set by the very men who had stolen her life. I fell to my knees, sobbing uncontrollably. Julian wrapped his arms tightly around me, holding me as I broke down. "I'm so sorry, Clara," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. Suddenly, a figure stumbled out of the smoke and debris near the side entrance. It was a woman, her clothes singed and covered in soot. She was coughing violently, leaning heavily against a firefighter. I froze, my breath catching in my throat. "Mom?" I whispered, scrambling to my feet. I broke free from Julian's grasp and ran toward her. As she looked up, her soot-stained face illuminated by the flashing lights, I stopped dead in my tracks. It wasn't my mother. It was Sophie's maid of honor, the woman Ryan had been having an affair with. And she was clutching a small, metal lockbox tightly to her chest.
