Chapter 1 - The Return

I stared at the glowing screen of Julian's phone until my eyes burned. The text message felt like a physical blow to my chest. The video was grainy, but there was no mistaking her face. My mother, Eleanor Hart, was sitting in a dimly lit, unfamiliar room. She looked older, her once bright eyes now sunken and dull. "Julian, what is this?" I whispered, my voice barely audible. Julian's jaw tightened, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the phone. "I don't know, Clara," he said, his voice unusually strained. He quickly forwarded the video to his security team with a single command. "Find the origin of this message. Now." I leaned back against the leather seat, my mind racing a million miles an hour. My father had told me my mother died in a car accident when I was seven. I had visited her grave every year on her birthday. I had cried over an empty plot of dirt for twenty-five years. "He lied about this too," I realized, the anger bubbling up inside me. "Graham faked her death." Julian pulled me close, wrapping his arm protectively around my shoulders. "We will find her, Clara," he promised, his voice full of dark determination. "And when we do, your father will pay for every single lie." The limousine pulled up to the gates of Julian's sprawling estate. As the massive iron gates swung open, a figure stepped out of the shadows. It was Sophie, her ruined wedding dress trailing in the mud. And she was holding a gun.
