Chapter 9 - The Final Standoff

"Daddy!" Chloe screamed as Harrison fell to the blood-stained wood.
I did not waste the distraction that my husband had just paid for with his life.
I raised my gun and fired a single shot into Victoria's right shoulder.
She shrieked in agony and dropped her silver pistol over the edge of the pier.
She stumbled backward, clutching her bleeding arm as her immaculate suit turned crimson.
I sprinted forward and scooped Chloe into my arms, hugging her so tightly she gasped.
Liam managed to shove the wounded Harrison off of him and scrambled to his feet.
He pulled a combat knife from his belt and charged aggressively toward me.
I shoved Chloe behind a stack of wooden crates and aimed my gun at Liam.
I pulled the trigger, but the weapon simply clicked empty.
I had forgotten to chamber a round when I reloaded the magazine in the truck.
Liam smirked maliciously and swung the heavy knife at my throat.
I ducked under the blade and drove my fist violently into his ribcage.
He grunted but quickly recovered, slashing the knife across my left forearm.
Pain flared up my arm, but the pure adrenaline kept me focused entirely on survival.
I grabbed a rusted heavy metal chain hanging from a nearby shipping crane.
I swung the heavy chain like a whip, striking Liam squarely across his face.
He dropped the knife and fell to his knees, his nose completely shattered.
I kicked him squarely in the chest, sending him sprawling across the wet planks.
Victoria was desperately trying to crawl toward her dropped weapon near the edge.
I walked over to her and firmly placed my boot down on her uninjured hand.
She screamed a string of vile curses at me, her glamorous facade completely destroyed.
"You will never win, Sarah, I have powerful friends everywhere," she spat blood onto my shoes.
"Your friends cannot save you now," a deep, authoritative voice boomed from behind us.
I spun around and saw dozens of heavily armed FBI agents swarming the pier.
The genuine authorities had finally arrived, completely untainted by Victoria's dirty money.
The lead agent walked forward and lowered his rifle as he looked at the bloody scene.
"We received an anonymous tip containing a decrypted file with Victoria's real identity," he stated firmly.

I looked down at Liam, who was grinning weakly through his shattered, bloody teeth.
He had actually flipped sides and sent the encrypted evidence to the real authorities during our drive.
