Chapter 6 - The Heiress Strikes

I yanked violently on the heavy steel door, but it was completely sealed.
Harrison wept silently on the bed, his spirit utterly broken by months of psychological torture.
"I had to do it, Sarah, she showed me pictures of Chloe sleeping in the motel," he cried.
I turned away from the door and faced him with a mixture of pity and burning anger.
"Where is Victoria?" I demanded, gripping the tire iron tightly in my right hand.
A cold, melodic laugh echoed through the intercom speaker on the wall.
"I am right here, Sarah," Victoria's voice floated into the room.
The fluorescent lights flickered on, momentarily blinding me with their harsh glare.
A hidden panel in the wall slid open to reveal an observation booth directly above the infirmary.
Victoria stood behind the thick bulletproof glass, wearing an immaculate designer suit.
"You have been a very stubborn nuisance, Sarah," she sighed dramatically.
She pressed a button on her control console, and a sweet-smelling gas began pouring through the air vents.
"I needed you to bring the child to me, and you delivered her perfectly," Victoria smiled.
My heart stopped as I realized I had led them directly to Chloe's hiding spot in the woods.
"Liam is currently retrieving my four billion dollar investment from your rusted car," she gloated.
I rushed to the air vent and desperately tried to smash it closed with the tire iron.
The metal simply dented, and the sweet gas continued to fill the small room.
My vision began to blur, and my legs felt as though they were made of wet sand.
I stumbled toward Harrison's bed and collapsed onto the cold linoleum floor.
"I will make sure your death looks like a tragic overdose, Sarah," Victoria's voice echoed in my fading consciousness.
"And Chloe will be raised by a very wealthy, loving stepmother," she added maliciously.
I fought the darkness with every ounce of my willpower, but my eyelids were incredibly heavy.
As the world faded to black, I felt a sharp pinch on my arm.
I forced my eyes open slightly and saw Harrison leaning over the side of his bed.
He had just injected me with a syringe filled with a clear liquid.

"Adrenaline," he whispered, his eyes suddenly sharp and completely lucid.
"My brainwashing was an act, get up and fight," he commanded as he slipped a stolen security keycard into my hand.
