Chapter 9 - The Hidden Fortune

Judge Leonard read loudly, "December twenty-eighth."

He continued, "Dad laughed on the phone and said he successfully hid two million dollars in a bank account in the Cayman Islands."

The entire gallery erupted into loud gasps and shocked whispers.

The judge added, "He also gave his friend an account number, which the boy has conveniently written down right here."

He read off a long string of digits that Toby had meticulously copied with his black marker.

I sat frozen in my chair, completely overwhelmed by the sheer scale of Russell's deception.

He had claimed total bankruptcy, forcing me to work three terrible jobs just to keep the heat on.

All while he sat on millions of hidden dollars, plotting to steal my son just to punish me.

Russell cried out from the floor, "That money belongs to my business partners, it is not mine!"

The judge coldly replied, "You just confessed to international wire fraud on the public record, Mister Davenport."

Benedict Welch snapped his expensive briefcase shut and briskly stepped away from the defense table.

The lawyer announced, "Your Honor, I formally request to withdraw as counsel for Mister Davenport immediately."

He added, "I cannot represent a client who has committed gross perjury and hidden massive assets during discovery."

Judge Leonard nodded slowly, granting the request with a simple wave of his hand.

Russell screamed curses at his retreating lawyer, fighting against the heavy metal handcuffs biting into his wrists.

The judge ordered the bailiff, "Take this man into holding immediately."

He added, "And contact the federal authorities regarding this offshore account information."

The bailiff hauled Russell to his feet, dragging the disgraced, wealthy liar out through the heavy side doors.

As the doors slammed shut, a strange, beautiful peace settled over the chaotic courtroom.

Toby walked back toward my table, holding his faded, inside-out shirt in his hands.

I dropped to my knees right there on the dirty courtroom floor and pulled him into a desperate hug.

He buried his face in my neck, finally allowing himself to cry after being so incredibly brave.

I sobbed into his hair, "You did it, sweetheart."

I finished, "You saved us both today."

The judge softly requested, "Missus Davenport, please return to your seat."

He stated, "I am ready to deliver my final ruling in this matter."
