Chapter 2 - The Hallway Ultimatum

Judge Leonard raised his hand to quiet the murmurs echoing through the courtroom.

The judge announced, "Given the severity of these allegations, I am calling a thirty-minute recess to review this file."

He slammed his gavel down, leaving my ears ringing.

Toby reached up and grabbed my hand, his small fingers trembling like autumn leaves.

He whispered with his eyes wide with terror, "Are they taking me away, Mom?"

I promised him, "Never."

I led him out into the bustling hallway to get some fresh air.

Before we could even reach the water fountain, Russell stepped right into our path.

His expensive cologne was suffocating, bringing back memories of every time he had belittled me in our old kitchen.

Russell sneered, "You should have just taken the quiet way out, Brenda."

I hissed, "You wrote that fake report."

Russell casually checked his silver watch, a smirk playing on his lips.

He challenged with his voice dripping with arrogance, "Prove it."

He leaned in closer, dropping his voice to a menacing whisper.

He whispered menacingly, "You have no lawyer, no money, and now you have the state breathing down your neck."

I stood my ground, refusing to let him see how terrified I truly was.

I fired back, "I will tell the judge you fabricated the whole thing."

Russell laughed softly and asked, "And who will he believe?"

He continued, "The successful business owner in a tailored suit, or the frantic cleaning lady who cannot afford a new shirt for her child?"

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a crisp, folded legal document.

He demanded, "Sign this custody surrender form right now, and the abuse investigation magically disappears today."

My stomach churned at the sheer evil radiating from the man I once loved.

I declared, "I would rather die than give my son to a monster like you."

Russell's smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, dead stare.

He promised, "Then prepare to leave this courthouse entirely alone."

As he walked back into the courtroom, my phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text from my mother, Martha, who was supposed to be watching the apartment.

The message sent a fresh wave of ice straight through my veins.

The text message read, "Brenda, the police are here at the house, and they have an eviction notice with your name on it."
