Chapter 8 - The Father's Secrets

The tension in the courtroom was so thick it felt hard to breathe.

Judge Leonard cleared his throat loudly and looked down at the horrifying fabric diary.

The judge read aloud, "October fourteenth."

He continued reading, "Dad locked me inside the hot garage for four hours because I accidentally spilled juice on his new rug."

I let out a wounded cry, clapping my hands over my mouth in horror.

Toby had come home that weekend looking exhausted, but he claimed he had just played too hard outside.

Russell shouted in a panic, "That is a complete fabrication!"

He added, "He is a lying child seeking attention from his unstable mother!"

The judge ignored him entirely, tracing his finger down to the next paragraph on the shirt.

The judge read darker, "November second."

He continued, "Dad had a party and told a woman that he wished I had never been born so he could travel more."

Tears freely streamed down my face as I looked at my beautiful, brave boy.

He had carried these terrible, heavy secrets against his own skin for months just to protect me.

Welch frantically packed his legal pads into his expensive briefcase, trying to distance himself from the disaster.

Welch nervously stammered, "Your Honor, as legal counsel, I had absolutely no prior knowledge of any of these alleged actions."

Judge Leonard barked aggressively, "Sit down and remain silent, counselor."

He shifted the shirt, exposing a dense block of text written near the bottom hem.

The judge announced, "This next entry is from late December, and I think the IRS might find it very interesting."

Russell practically leaped over the defense table, his eyes wild with absolute desperation.

Russell shrieked, "You cannot read that out loud, it is illegal, private information!"

The large bailiff tackled Russell from behind, slamming him hard onto the wooden floor.

Handcuffs clicked loudly as Russell was pinned firmly against the ground, thrashing and screaming.

The courtroom was in total chaos, with spectators whispering furiously and pointing at the arrested father.

Judge Leonard banged his heavy gavel relentlessly until the room finally quieted down again.

He looked at the detained man on the floor, shaking his head in absolute disgust.

The judge declared, "There is no privacy in a court of law when you bring a fraudulent case before me."

He looked back at the secret writing on the shirt, his eyes widening as he read the final, most damning secret.
