Chapter 7 - The Underground Maze

I stared at my twelve-year-old nephew, completely struggling to process the sheer gravity of his words.

"What could an eight-year-old boy possibly know that warrants a tactical execution squad?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Jackson pointed nervously at my coat pocket, where I had hidden the heavy brass key.

"It is not about what he knows, it is about what that key unlocks," Jackson explained frantically.

"Grandpa works for a cartel, and that key opens the safety deposit box containing their main ledger."

The revelation hit me like a physical blow to the stomach.

My seemingly boring accountant father was the money launderer for a massive criminal syndicate.

"We have to get out of this building right now," I said, pushing the laundry cart toward the exit doors.

Jackson shook his head violently and stepped in front of the heavy metal cart.

"We cannot go outside, the entire hospital perimeter is surrounded by cartel spotters."

"If we walk out those doors, they will gun us down in the parking lot."

"Then how do we escape?" I demanded, feeling the suffocating walls closing in around us.

Jackson pulled a crumpled, hand-drawn map out of his soaked jacket pocket.

"There is an old steam tunnel beneath the sub-basement that connects to the city sewer system."

"I found the blueprints in Grandpa's office last year when I was snooping around."

I had no choice but to trust the boy who had brutally beaten my son just two hours ago.

We abandoned the laundry cart, and I carefully picked Leo up in my arms.

Jackson led us down a dark, concrete maintenance stairwell that smelled heavily of mold and rust.

We descended three flights of stairs until we reached a heavy iron door marked with a biohazard warning.

Jackson quickly picked the old rusted lock using a pair of stolen medical tweezers.

The heavy door groaned open, revealing a dark, dripping concrete tunnel stretching into absolute darkness.

We walked in silence for what felt like miles, relying only on the dim flashlight from my cell phone.

Leo finally started to wake up, groaning softly against my shoulder as the painkillers wore off.

"Mom, where are we?" Leo whispered, looking around the terrifying underground maze.

"We are playing a game of hide and seek, buddy," I lied, kissing his warm forehead.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic clang echoed violently down the tunnel from the direction we had just come.

Someone had found the open iron door.

We heard the unmistakable sound of heavy combat boots splashing through the ankle-deep water.

They were following our trail.

Jackson panicked, running ahead blindly into the darkness and splashing loudly in the muddy water.

"Jackson, wait!" I hissed, but he was already turning a corner and disappearing from my flashlight beam.

Five seconds later, Jackson let out a deafening, blood-curdling scream that abruptly cut off into dead silence.
