Chapter 1 - The Escape

The first officer stared down my mother with eyes completely void of sympathy.

"Ma'am," he repeated, his voice cutting through the thick tension in the room.

"Dispatch heard you say exactly those words on the recorded line."

My mother opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out.

Her meticulously manicured hands trembled as she backed away from the police officer.

The fake, worried-grandmother mask she had worn seconds ago shattered completely.

The living room smelled nauseatingly of her artificial lemon cleaner and burnt coffee.

My father finally dropped his television remote, the heavy plastic clattering loudly against the hardwood floor.

My sister, Sarah, crossed her arms tightly across her chest and glared at me.

"This is completely ridiculous and a massive waste of taxpayer money," Sarah snapped.

"My son barely touched him during their little argument."

Officer Davis ignored her entirely and crouched beside my eight-year-old son, Leo.

"Buddy, my name is Officer Davis, and you are going to be just fine."

"The paramedics are pulling up to the curb right now."

Two emergency medical technicians burst through the front door carrying heavy trauma bags and a collapsible stretcher.

They quickly but gently assessed Leo's ribs, confirming the severe internal bruising.

Every shallow breath Leo took sounded like crushed glass inside his small chest.

One of the medics placed a pediatric oxygen mask over Leo's pale face.

I grabbed my purse, ignoring the furious stares of the family that had raised me.

"I am riding in the ambulance with him," I told the officer firmly.

Officer Davis nodded and keyed his shoulder microphone to secure the scene.

"Nobody is allowed to leave this house until I finish conducting my interviews."

My father finally stood up from his recliner, his face turning an angry shade of red.

"You have absolutely no right to hold us hostage in our own living room."

"We know the local judge, and I will have your badge for this massive overreach."

Officer Davis did not even flinch at the empty threat.

"You have eleven minutes of audio evidence working against you, sir."

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the back hallway of the house.

Sarah gasped loudly and sprinted toward her son's bedroom.

"Jackson!" she screamed at the top of her lungs.

We all heard her let out a terrified shriek that rattled the hallway walls.

Officer Davis immediately drew his service weapon and ran toward the noise.

I stood frozen in the doorway, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

The officer stepped back out of the bedroom holding a shattered wooden window frame.

"Your twelve-year-old nephew is not in his room," the officer announced grimly.

"He kicked the glass out, climbed through the window, and there is a massive trail of fresh blood leading into the woods."
