Chapter 3 - The Hospital Trap

I ended the call with Jackson as the ambulance aggressively slammed on its brakes.

We had finally arrived at the emergency bay of Memorial General Hospital.

The back doors swung open, and a team of trauma nurses immediately pulled Leo's stretcher out into the rain.

I shoved the brass key deep into my own coat pocket and ran inside behind them.

They wheeled Leo into an emergency surgical suite to stabilize his fractured ribs.

A sympathetic nurse gently pushed me back into the waiting room, telling me I could not follow.

I paced the sterile linoleum floor, completely torn between my son and my terrified nephew.

If Jackson was telling the truth, he was being hunted like an animal in the woods.

If he was lying, it was just another twisted manipulation taught to him by my sister.

The automatic doors of the waiting room slid open with a quiet hiss.

My father and my sister strode into the room, flanked by two men in expensive gray suits.

They did not look like concerned family members rushing to check on a hurt child.

They looked like executives arriving for a hostile corporate takeover.

Sarah marched straight up to me, pointing a perfectly manicured finger at my chest.

"You are going to drop these ridiculous police charges right now," Sarah demanded.

My father stood behind her, his eyes cold and calculating.

"We have spoken to the hospital administration," my father stated calmly.

"These two gentlemen are our lawyers, and they have already drafted a retraction statement for you to sign."

I stared at the family I had known my entire life, realizing I did not actually know them at all.

"My son is in surgery because of Jackson, and you want me to sign a paper?" I yelled.

"Keep your voice down," my father warned, stepping uncomfortably close to my face.

"You are going to give me the item Leo stole from my house, and you are going to do it quietly."

"If you cooperate, I will ensure the doctors take excellent care of your boy."

The implied threat hung in the air like toxic smoke.

"And if I refuse?" I asked, my voice shaking with raw fury.

My father smiled, but the expression did not reach his cold eyes.

"Then Child Protective Services will be very interested in the anonymous tip they just received."

"A tip claiming you beat your own son and tried to frame a twelve-year-old boy."

Suddenly, the surgical ward doors swung open, and the lead doctor walked out with a grim expression.

"Are you the mother of Leo?" the doctor asked, looking directly at me.

"Yes," I answered, pushing past my father to reach the physician.

"He is stable, but we found something highly unusual on his chest x-rays," the doctor said.

"There is a small, unauthorized tracking microchip surgically embedded deep inside your son's shoulder."
