Chapter 1 - THE EXTRACTION

"Commander? We have a Directive Seven protocol at my daughter's location."

The voice on the other end of the encrypted satellite phone didn't hesitate. “Copy that, Ghost Lead. Medevac and containment units are en route. ETA is four minutes. Secure the package.”

I shoved the phone back into my pocket and turned my attention to Emily. She was trembling violently, her skin pale and slick with a dangerous fever. The jagged, uneven clumps of her beautiful auburn hair fell across her face—a testament to the horrific abuse she had just endured. I hoisted her gently into my arms. Despite her condition, she buried her face into my chest, her fingers clutching my flannel shirt like a lifeline.

"You're safe now, Em," I whispered, pressing a kiss to her temple. "Daddy’s got you."

Beatrice stood frozen against the bedroom wall, the heavy kitchen shears slipping from her manicured fingers to clatter against the hardwood floor. The arrogant sneer she had worn just moments ago was entirely gone, replaced by the pale, wide-eyed look of prey realizing it was trapped in a cage with a predator.

"You... you can't just take her!" Beatrice stammered, her voice shrill and desperate. "We are the Vances! I am calling the police! I will have you locked in a cell for the rest of your pathetic life!"

"Call them," I said, my voice dead and flat. "Call every cop in the county. Tell them John Hayes is here."

I didn't wait for her to move. I carried my daughter out of the room, stepping past the shattered oak door. As I descended the grand staircase, Marcus was still on the driveway, on his hands and knees, violently dry-heaving onto the pristine cobblestones.

He looked up as I approached, his face twisted in a mixture of pain and rage. "You're dead, you old freak! You hear me? Dead!"

Before he could pull his phone out to dial 911, the deep, rhythmic thumping of helicopter rotors vibrated through the air. The trees lining the Vance estate bowed under the massive downdraft. A matte-black UH-60 Black Hawk, entirely devoid of identifying military markings, descended rapidly onto the perfectly manicured front lawn.

Marcus fell backward onto the grass, covering his face against the flying debris.

The side doors slid open, and four men in unmarked tactical gear poured out, securing the perimeter with suppressed carbines. Two combat medics rushed forward, taking Emily from my arms and securing her onto a portable stretcher.

"Vitals are crashing, Commander," one of the medics shouted over the rotors. "We need to move!"

I climbed into the cabin behind them. As the Black Hawk lifted off the ground, I looked down through the open door. Marcus and Beatrice were standing on the lawn, staring up in absolute, paralyzing horror. They thought they had been torturing the daughter of a broke, helpless mechanic.

They had just declared war on a ghost.
