Chapter 7 - The Interrogations

Within forty-eight hours, the story broke on every major news network.

"HEIRESS ARRESTED IN BILLION-DOLLAR ESTATE FRAUD AND ELDER ABUSE SCANDAL."

I sat behind the two-way mirror at the federal building, watching Detective Ramirez interrogate Chloe. She looked haggard. Her designer dress was wrinkled, her makeup was smeared, and she was shivering in the cold interrogation room.

"We have the wire transfers, Chloe," Detective Ramirez said, dropping a thick file onto the metal table. "Two million dollars transferred to Dr. Aris to falsify the medical records. Another million to Arthur Sterling. And we have the audio recording of your father detailing the abuse."

"I want immunity," Chloe mumbled, staring at the table. "I'll testify against Derek. I'll tell you everything he did. He planned it all."

In the adjacent room, Derek was doing the exact same thing. He was crying, blaming Chloe for the entire scheme, claiming he was just a battered husband forced to comply with his psychotic wife's demands.

Harrison Cole stood next to me in the observation room, sipping a coffee.

"They're burying each other," Harrison chuckled darkly. "The prosecutor doesn't even have to work for this one. They're handing over the nails for their own coffins."

"What about Sterling and Dr. Aris?" I asked.

"Sterling surrendered his law license this morning in exchange for a reduced sentence. Dr. Aris was arrested at the airport trying to board a flight to Dubai. It's a clean sweep, Evelyn. You won."

I looked through the glass at Chloe. I didn't feel victorious. I just felt a hollow ache for the husband I had lost. But I had promised Arthur I would take them down, and I always kept my promises.
