Chapter 2 - Gathering the Wolves

I didn't call the police. Not yet. A simple arrest wasn't enough. I needed to dismantle Chloe’s entire life, piece by arrogant piece.

The next morning, I drove into the city, bypassing Sterling’s plush corporate office. Instead, I parked outside a nondescript brick building in the financial district. This was the office of Harrison Cole. Harrison was a corporate litigator known as the "Undertaker" in elite legal circles. Arthur and I had kept him on retainer years ago for hostile takeovers. He was ruthless, brilliant, and completely devoid of mercy.

When I walked into his office in my dark mourning suit, he looked up from his mahogany desk, his piercing gray eyes narrowing.

"Evelyn," Harrison said, standing up. "I was sorry to hear about Arthur. But I was even more surprised when I saw the probate filings this morning. Arthur leaving everything to Chloe? It didn't make sense."

"Because it was a forgery coerced under duress," I stated flatly, dropping the voice recorder and the stack of unsent letters onto his desk. "And I have the proof."

Harrison listened to the tapes. For twenty minutes, the only sound in the room was Arthur’s dying voice detailing the kidnapping, the coercion, and the involvement of Mr. Sterling and Dr. Aris.

When the tape ended, Harrison leaned back in his leather chair. A dangerous, predatory smile spread across his face.

"They used Sterling to file the paperwork," Harrison mused, tapping his gold pen against the desk. "Which means they committed federal wire fraud, elder abuse, kidnapping, and conspiracy. Evelyn, what do you want me to do?"

"I want everything frozen," I said, my voice like ice. "I want the accounts locked. I want the credit cards cut. But most importantly, Harrison, I want them to find out in the most humiliating way possible."

Harrison picked up his office phone. "Let's go hunting."
