Chapter 9 - The Fire

Clara held the burning flame dangerously close to the massive pile of highly flammable shredded paper.
Her eyes were wild with desperation as she realized her wealthy lifestyle was officially over.
She screamed that I had ruined everything and destroyed the prestigious family name.
I raised my hands slowly and spoke to her in the calmest voice I could possibly muster.
I asked Clara if she honestly believed her husband was going to stand by her side through a federal prison sentence.
I revealed the final secret I had uncovered in my father's hidden accounting folders.
Clara's own husband had been secretly transferring millions of dollars out of their joint accounts into his private offshore funds.
I told her that while she was standing here threatening her own niece, her husband was already on a private plane to the Cayman Islands without her.
Clara froze completely, her hand trembling violently as the terrifying truth finally sank in.
She looked at my father, who slowly looked away, silently confirming that he had known about the betrayal all along.
The lighter slipped from Clara's shaking fingers and clattered harmlessly onto the cold stone floor.
She collapsed into a sobbing mess, realizing she had been completely abandoned by the people she trusted most.
I rushed forward and scooped Josephine into my arms, hugging her so tightly I never wanted to let go.
The deafening sound of police sirens and helicopter blades suddenly filled the air outside the mansion.
Dozens of heavily armored FBI agents aggressively breached the front doors with their weapons drawn.
They swiftly arrested Clara and my father, placing them in heavy steel handcuffs.

As the federal agents dragged my father out of the luxurious living room, he looked back at me and laughed a dark, chilling laugh.
He proudly stated that I had just activated a deadly dead-man's switch that would inevitably ruin us all.
