Chapter 5 - The Stolen Future

I stared at the bank statement in absolute horror and utter disbelief.
My father had literally stolen the future right out from under his own eight-year-old granddaughter.
The balance of the account was exactly zero dollars.
I shoved the physical ledger and the bank statements into my briefcase and sprinted out the emergency fire exit.
I ran several blocks to the main branch of the prestigious bank that held our family accounts.
I completely ignored the confused receptionist and barged directly into the branch manager's private office.
I slammed the empty trust fund statement onto his desk and aggressively demanded a full explanation.
The terrified manager frantically typed on his computer keyboard to pull up the official account records.
He nervously adjusted his glasses and told me that the funds had been legally withdrawn two weeks ago.
I shouted that I was the sole authorized signer on that specific account and I had never approved a single transfer.
The manager turned his computer monitor around so I could see the scanned signature card.
He explained that my father had brought in a secondary legal guardian who possessed full legal authority to authorize the massive withdrawal.
I stared at the digital signature on the screen, feeling the blood drain completely from my face.

It was not my father's signature on the final authorization form.
It was the signature of my late wife's mother, a bitter woman who had completely estranged herself from us years ago.
