Chapter 9 - The Insider

“Don’t move a single muscle, Colonel,” a familiar voice ordered from behind me.

I recognized the stern, authoritative tone instantly.

It was Special Agent Naomi Pierce from the Department of Defense Inspector General’s office.

I stood perfectly still, realizing the deep corruption extended far beyond the local police department.

“Agent Pierce,” I said evenly.

“You’re throwing away your entire career and your life for a stolen paycheck.”

Pierce chuckled darkly, pushing the gun harder against my head.

“A two-billion-dollar paycheck buys a lot of new lives, Colonel.”

Nadia walked closer, her face completely calm and flawless, devoid of any bruises or fear.

The dark marks that had covered her arms just an hour ago were entirely gone, washed away with makeup remover.

“Agent Pierce has been my inside woman at the DoD for the past two years,” Nadia explained coldly.

“She provided the clearance codes, I provided the Calder family’s corporate infrastructure, and you provided the perfect distraction.”

I looked at the daughter I had raised, the girl I had loved and protected with my life.

“You framed me, Nadia.”

“You used your dead mother's signature to funnel the money, ensuring I would be the primary suspect if anyone dug too deep.”

Nadia shrugged casually, showing absolutely zero remorse.

“It was nothing personal, Dad.”

“It was just the most logical chess move to clear the board.”

Suddenly, the heavy door to the hospital room swung wide open.

Major Livia Hart stepped into the room, holding her tactical rifle.

Agent Pierce immediately spun around to aim her pistol at Livia, but she was too slow.

Livia fired a single, silenced shot.

The rubber, non-lethal riot round struck Agent Pierce squarely in the chest, dropping her instantly to the floor.

Nadia gasped, taking a panicked step backward.

Livia quickly kicked Pierce’s weapon away and secured the unconscious agent with heavy restraints.

I let out a massive breath, the tension leaving my body as the cavalry finally arrived.

“Excellent timing, Major,” I said, wiping a mixture of sweat and blood from my forehead.

Livia nodded grimly, keeping her rifle aimed directly at Nadia.

“It's over, Nadia,” Livia said firmly.

“The building is surrounded, the Calders are in custody, and we have the offshore account numbers.”

Nadia stared at Livia, her cold facade cracking for the first time as she realized she had lost.
