Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Nadia slowly raised her hands in surrender, stepping away from the laptop.
I walked over to my daughter, feeling a mixture of profound relief and devastating heartbreak.
I grabbed the heavy metal handcuffs from Livia’s belt.
“You’re going to federal prison for a very long time, Nadia.”
I secured her wrists, completing the arrest and effectively dismantling the greatest financial conspiracy in modern military history.
The media helicopters buzzed outside the window, capturing the definitive end of the Calder empire and the recovery of the stolen funds.
Vivienne and Preston were being hauled into federal transport vehicles right outside the hospital doors.
It was a total, undeniable victory.
The two billion dollars were safe, my name was cleared, and the corruption had been ripped out by the roots.
I pulled Nadia into a brief, sorrowful hug, mourning the daughter I thought I knew.
But as my arms wrapped around her shoulders, Nadia leaned in close.
She whispered directly into my ear, her voice dripping with venomous amusement.
“Thank you for clearing the board, Dad.”
I felt a sharp, sudden prick in the side of my neck.
Nadia stepped back, revealing a small, empty medical syringe hidden perfectly in her palm.
My vision immediately began to blur as the powerful paralytic chemical flooded my bloodstream.
I collapsed to my knees, unable to move my arms or legs, and looked desperately up at Major Livia Hart for help.
Livia didn't raise her rifle or call for medical assistance.
Instead, Major Hart calmly slung her weapon over her shoulder, pulled a small silver key from her pocket, and unlocked Nadia’s handcuffs.
“The jet is waiting on the roof, Boss,” Livia said to my daughter.

Nadia smiled, grabbed the laptop containing the two billion dollars, and stepped right over my paralyzed body.
“Let's go, Major,” Nadia said, leaving me completely helpless on the floor as the two of them walked out the door.
