Chapter 2 - Jurisdiction

The silence in the hospital room was absolute.

Preston struggled against the grip of the military police officer, his designer suit rumpled and torn.

Vivienne stared at her phone as if it had suddenly turned into a venomous snake.

“This is an illegal overreach of federal power,” Vivienne finally hissed, turning her furious gaze toward Major Livia Hart.

“You have no jurisdiction in a civilian hospital.”

Vivienne's lead attorney, a slick man named Vance, stepped forward and pulled a folded document from his briefcase.

“My client is absolutely correct.”

“I have an emergency injunction signed five minutes ago by Judge Harrison.”

“It strictly prohibits military personnel from detaining any member of the Calder family on civilian property.”

Detective Mara Bennett looked at me, her expression apologetic as her police radio crackled.

The local dispatch ordered all city police units to stand down and assist the Calders in escorting the military off the premises.

Vance smiled smugly and handed the injunction to Major Hart.

“You need to release Preston right now, or I will have you arrested for kidnapping.”

For a brief, agonizing moment, it looked like the Calders had won again.

Money had bought the judge, and corruption had bought the local police force.

Preston violently shook off the military police officer, adjusting his tie with a sickening smirk.

“Nice try, Colonel.”

“But you can't touch us.”

I looked at Major Hart, giving her a subtle nod.

Major Hart did not even look at the judge's injunction before tearing it in half.

Vance gasped in sheer outrage, reaching for his phone to call the judge back.

“Are you out of your mind, Major?”

“You are openly defying a federal court order on civilian ground!”

Major Hart stepped closer to Vivienne, her eyes cold and unyielding.

“That would be true, Mr. Vance, if we were actually on civilian ground.”

Major Hart pulled a different document from her tactical vest and slapped it onto the doctor's rolling tray.

“As of exactly one hour ago, the Department of Veterans Affairs finalized an emergency buyout of Mercy General Hospital.”

“This building is now classified as a federal military medical installation.”

Preston’s smirk instantly vanished.

“Therefore, your civilian judge has zero jurisdiction here, and you are all currently trespassing on a restricted military base.”

Vivienne took a step back, realizing the trap had been flawless.

But before the MPs could put the handcuffs on Preston, the hospital room lights suddenly flickered and died.

A deafening alarm began to blare through the pitch-black corridors.

And Preston Calder was completely gone.
